Description

The Logodaj Winery began in 1994 and can be found in the heart of the stunning Struma Valley which is the sunniest and hottest part of Bulgaria, with over 700 acres of land. Implementing a rich history and centuries long traditions in wine production in partnership with the warm sun rays and the terrain, they are able to craft world class wines few outside the country have experienced. The skill of the winemakers has been known for many years and they make their wines with the native Broad-leaved Melnik vine and Early Melnik vine grape varieties that are grown only in this part of the world along the Struma valley.

Immediately after harvesting the grapes are taken to a pre-cold maceration for 4 or 5 days at a temperature of 8-10°C. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks with 12 months ageing in a combination of used small French oak 225-litre barriques and big 2-tonnes Slavonian oak barrels where the wine also undergoes malolactic fermentation.

Melnik 55 or “early Melnik” is a genetic-cross between the local Broad-leafed Melnik and French Valdeguié. Melnik 55 and Broad-leaf Melnik grow almost exclusively in Struma Valley in the Southwestern part of Bulgaria.

It is said that Sir Winston Churchill had a regular annual shipment of Melnik red wines to the cellar at 10 Downing street!
