Description
Lebanon is amongst the oldest sites in wine production in the world. Today Mersel Wines continue this legacy, with the same passion that the Phoenicians had centuries ago.
The name ‘Mersel Wine’ comes from the region Maksar Mersel, which is the highest viticulture region in Lebanon, located between the Cedars and Ainata El Arz at an altitude ranging between 2,000 and 2,400m. They also have vineyards in Ainata in the Bekaa Valley, Dimane and Bcharre in Wadi Qannoubine, and Bousit in Northern Lebanon.
Their philosophy is to keep it simple; wines are made naturally, with very little or no sulfites and the wines are unfiltered and unfined using organic farming methods.
Mersel Wine is committed to producing high-quality wines and spirits that are not mainstream in the Lebanese market, showcasing grapes that are indigenous to the land.
Marini grapes were left on skins for two weeks, then pressed and fermented in Georgian Qvevri, where they continued to ferment until dry. They were then aged in Lebanese amphora where natural malolactic fermentation took place. Unfined, unfiltered.
On the label you will find a Nubian Ibex. The Nubian Ibex is a desert goat species that had been extirpated in Lebanon. Mersel used to be a forest in which the Nubian Ibex sought shelter, but with urbanization, deforestation and being hunted they disappeared and instead domesticated goats took their place. Mersel wines use organic waste from the vineyard to feed this species.
The Marini grapes originate from Blouza in Wadi Annoubine, grown on sandy volcanic soils at no less than 1,800 m above sea level! The vines are 150-years-old, own-rooted, and co-planted with Merwah.
